Trapped Newborns!

We had a call from a woman who had been feeding a stray cat that she said was pregnant. Her husband was recovering at home from heart surgery and it was disturbing him to see the stray cat visiting the deck. She wanted the cat removed right away but not destroyed. She hoped the Humane Society could help her.

Volunteer Cheryl Rohr went out to the home that afternoon and set a trap for the cat. She asked the woman to call her in the morning if the cat was in the trap, but the next day there was no call and no one answered the phone. Cheryl drove over to the home and found the mother cat with three new born kittens in the trap! The people had had to return to the hospital for a check up and had not had time to call.

Cheryl packed the trap into her vehicle and headed home. She was willing to foster the little family. Six weeks later we found a home through our website for Cricket, a beautiful long hair calico. But her momma Raven and her brothers Samson and Dusty were all black. Carol West put up this special appeal on the web site, to no avail:

Black cats
I would like to add my personal opinion at this point. Many people will not adopt a black cat, mainly out of superstition. Nothing could be further from the truth. I think that black cats are the most beautiful and loving. You would be doing yourself a favor by adopting a black cat.
You will have a friend for life!

As time went by and no one inquired about them, Cheryl decided to keep them. Raven, who is a feral cat and does not like to be indoors, has found herself fine lodgings in Cheryl’s barn. She loves to hike with Cheryl up the mountain behind her home. Samson and Dusty are keeping the other dogs and cats in Cheryl’s household entertained with their kitten antics. Cricket lives a pampered life in the next county, but Cheryl gets regular email photos from her proud new family.
